Experimental Study on the Ligation of Common Carotid Artery and its Pressure Changes for Aneurysm

Abstract
Author experienced four cases with intracranial aneurysm and a case with carotid-cavernous fistula, who were treated successfully by the ligation of common carotid artery.
Ten rabbits and five dogs were scarified for experimental study, and changes of carotid arterial pressure were detected with or without the ligation of carotid artery. The results were as the followings;
1. The pressure of carotid artery in patients with intracranial aneurysm or carotid-cavernous fistula were ranging from 169 to 199 cmH2O. The reduction of carotid arterial pressure following the ligation of carotid artery in those cases were ranging from 33.3 to 34.1%. So it should seem that the ligation of carotid artery were effective in the treatment of those cases.
2. The pressure of carotid artery in healthy rabbits were ranging from 105 to 144 cm H2O.
The reduction of carotid arterial pressure following the ligation of carotid artery in rabbits were ranging from 71.4 to 82.5%. But it would seem that the results were to be meaningless because the animal is biologically one of lower order.
3. The pressure of carotid artery in healthy dogs were ranging from 144 to 160 cmH2O.
The reduction of carotid arterial pressure following the ligation of carotid artery in dogs were ranging from 2.5 to 11.1%. It was difficult to decide that the ligation of carotid artery were effective in the treatment of intracranial aneurysm in dogs.
4. In dogs the pressure of right carotid artery were ranging from 144 to 157 cmH2O, and those of left side were ranging from 148 to 157 cmH2O.
In rabbits the pressure of right carotid artery were ranging from 105 to 135 cmH2O, and those of left side were ranging from 110 to 140 cmH2O.
